Looking Forward

We’re back at it today, but we never took a full break this holiday. This was the first Christmas that Rachel and I have spent at home and it was just a practical decision. We spent all of November building out our new studio + shop and just opened up shortly before the holidays. Now we’re working hard on new releases for SS15. Since we’ve moved to St. Augustine, however, being at home is more relaxing than it used to be and we’ve even had a few beach days and sailing excursions over the last few weeks.

Yield is now 2 years old, but 2015 will be the first year that Rachel and I are engaged in the company without any other commitments (this past summer I quit splitting my time between Yield and Mosey, another company I founded with fellow CCA grads/friends) and we’re excited to get to it with a renewed focus. Here are a few things that have been on my mind looking forward to this year:

Better, tighter control
Yield now has a legitimate home with room to grow our team and qc, store and ship all of our products. As a result, we’ve begun to fulfill orders directly from our new home base. We’d previously used external warehouses as our space in San Francisco was at a premium. It’s a major shift and we’ll be bringing on a new person to do it, but we want to better the experience we provide in every way and this is one step in that direction.

Fewer products, even higher quality
Since the beginning we’ve had a focus on quality and craft but it’s our belief that there is ALWAYS room to improve. Looking forward to our new releases in 2015, we’ve begun to work with some new manufacturers that are truly expert in their craft. 

Quiet innovation
A change of location and scenery always spurs a bit of introspection and our move out of SF has been no different. Since we started, we’ve been described as a very “San Francisco” brand and it’s true, the progressive attitude, food loving, nature loving qualities are still a part of us. But now that we’re in a location that doesn’t conjure up a clear lifestyle image or design aesthetic for most people, it’s provided an opportunity not to just lean on our city, but to better define what it is that we do.

The way I can best describe it is that we aim for a sort of "quiet innovation", an ability to push boundaries without wearing it on the sleeve. The Charles Eames quote “Innovate as a last resort” has always resonated with me, not because innovation is bad, but because innovation as an end unto itself it rarely delivers valuable products that stand the test of time and that's what we're after.
